BJ Byers

Conservationist
bj@groundswellwisconsin.org

BJ joined Groundswell in 2019 as our Conservationist.  While primarily working on land protection and easement monitoring, BJ will also expand community engagement at our Westport Drumlin and Patrick Marsh Preserves.

BJ earned his master’s degree in wildlife ecology from the University of Wisconsin, where he focused on the effects of fall biomass harvests on grassland birds and grassland-nesting waterfowl.  Most recently, he was a Private Lands Biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service where he worked one-on-one with private landowners to restore native tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and wetland habitats.  He also worked jointly with Duck’s Unlimited to help write and administer North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grants across the state.

When not out walking through a prairie, you may find BJ fly/ice fishing, deer/turkey hunting, canoeing, hiking, birdwatching, or vegetable gardening with his wife Carolyn and 2-year old son Jay in Middleton.
